China's Ice Dancers Under Probe After Displaying Toy Missile at Event
ISU officials are conducting an investigation after two Chinese figure skaters appeared with what looked like a replica weapon during a grand prix figure skating event.
Broadcast video showed the skaters sitting alongside a large toy shaped like a rocket marked “DF-61” as they awaited their scores in the “kiss and cry” zone on Saturday.
This model represents a new China-produced land-based intercontinental ballistic missile designed for carrying nuclear weapons, that had been unveiled during a national ceremony last month.
Officials have acknowledged of an unsuitable soft toy seems to have been one of the objects tossed onto the rink by audience members following a routine at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China event,” the organization stated in an emailed statement.
The item was subsequently handled by the skaters after their performance. We apologizes for the incident and will investigate further.”
The duo placed eighth of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, which was won by Madison Chock and Evan Bates from the US.
